Saeed Ajmal is one of those bowlers of modern day cricket who can trouble any batsman. He can pick wickets at regular intervals, can break partnerships and can contain runs in the depth overs. He is one of the best off-spinner in today’s cricket world and has proved his mettle especially in international T20 tournaments, which is a batsmans’ game.
It is one of Saeed Ajmal’s signature deliveries. Pehla is the normal delivery which off-break bowler bowls. Ajmal is a right-arm off spinner, therefore, his stock delivery (i.e. pehla) turns into right handed batsmen and turns away from the left handed batsmen.
Saeed Ajmal mostly relies on his “doosra” and also on other variations of flight and speed. Ajmal bowls flatter than most of the off-spinners.
Doosra spins in the opposite direction to an off break, causing it to spin from the leg side to the off side to a right-handed batsman. Doosra is equivalent to a leg-spinner’s googly. Doosra was invented by Pakistan’s Saqlain Mushtaq but Saeed Ajmal has mastered the delivery and has caused problems to opponents batsmen. Doosra has been very effective for Ajmal, as many batsmen including Australian Michael Hussey (a very good player of spin) have failed in picking Ajmal’s doosra.
Before the high profile series against England in UAE in 2012, Ajmal claimed that he has invented a new delivery “Teesra”. Teesra is simply an orthodox back spinner, a very common delivery that has been bowled by finger spinners from the many years. Saqlain Mushtaq was also the brains behind this “teesra”. Teesra is also known as “Jalebi”.
Saeed Ajmal is currently Pakistan’s number one bowler in all forms of game with his amazing ability to contain runs and also pick wickets. During the past few years, he has remained the top wicket taker for Pakistan.
He was the highest wicket taker in test matches in 2011 from Pakistan. He picked 50 wickets in 8 matches; second on the list was Abdur Rehman with 36 wickets in 8 matches. Ajmal is the highest wicket taker in 2012 so far, with 39 wickets in six matches.
In ODIs, Saeed was behind Shahid Afridi in 2011 where he took 34 wickets in 20 matches. However, in the current year, Ajmal is on top with 31 wickets in 16 matches. In 2012 T20 Internationals, Ajmal has 24 wickets in 14 matches, which means that he is once again the top performer in the Pakistan cricket team.
